Today’s Daf Yomi Question:

The Gemara by us refers to the word ‘motzi’ as describing a past event.  But don’t we find elsewhere that the word ‘motzi’ is used in a present tense – a lashon ‘hoveh’ rather than a lashon ‘avar’ where the word ‘hotzi’ would be used?

Today’s Daf Yomi Question:

Beis Shamai offer two reasons why the bracha on the ‘Day’ precedes the bracha on the wine 1) since the day is the catalyst 2) the day arrives first.  When the Gemara asks from havdalah (where we see that the bracha on wine is recited first) why can’t the Gemara answer that havdalah doesn’t have two reasons (only the first but not the second) since the wine is present before the weekday arrives?

Today’s Daf Yomi Question:

The Mishna lists the neglect of Niddah, Challah and Ner Shabbos which can be seriously consequential during childbirth.  How is it that Ner Shabbos which is only a Mitzvah derabanan, is equated in severity with Niddah and Challah which are issurim min hatorah?

Today’s Daf Yomi Question:

The Gemara states that Hachnasas Orchim is greater than Torah; but then we learn in the Mishna that Torah equals all the Mitzvos combined.  How can this be explained?

Shabbos 142 – שבת קמב

The Gemara concludes that he rock was needed to plug an opening in the basket.  Generally, the allowance to move Muktza (indirectly) is only for the sake of a permissible object etc. but not for the sake of using the Muktza itself.  Why in this case may he move the rock for the sake of its own use?

Today’s Daf Yomi Question:

The Gemara asks: “If one cannot demand the return of a Yom Tov loan, then what does it mean that Shemitta is ‘Meshamet’ (since he cannot collect in any case – Rashi)”.  Rashi explained earlier that Rav Yosef is only discussing the inability to collect a Yom Tov loan through the power of Beis Din; it would seem that he is still certainly owed the money, and may rightfully collect upon his own authority.  Why can’t Shemitta be referring to the negation of that right?

Today’s Daf Yomi Question:

Rebbi Yehuda’s allowance to place the Eruv on the grave is apparently in a case of Mitzvah, which is not considered a personal benefit.  If so why do the Rabanan not allow it?

Eruvin 32 – עירובין לב

Rashi explains that the Chaver feels responsible for the Am Ha’aretz due to ‘Lifnei Iver’ (putting a stumbling block before a blind man); why shouldn’t he simply assume that fresh fruit off a tree is certainly Tevel (as an Am Ha’retz, he surely wouldn’t ponder that the Chaver feels especially responsible toward an unrelaible Am Haa’aretz)?

When placing the Eruv on a tree (below ten tefachim) why can’t he rely on instructing a goy to remove it for him – something which is permitted for the sake of Mitzvah – rather than removing it himself Bein Hashmashos (which is only permitted according to Rebbi)?

Today’s Daf Yomi Question:

The Gemara located a Tanna who holds ’Ein Bereira’ by a Derabanan – from the Braisa of Techumin.  Tosfos explains that we could not prove this from the Braisa of Maaser, since although Maaser of vegetables is Derabanan, nevertheless the concept of Maaser is rooted in Torah, and is therefore (perhaps ) more stringent.  But isn’t Techumin also rooted in Torah, according to the opinions who hold that the Twelve Mil limit is min hatorah?
