Today’s Daf Yomi Question:

The Gemara says the day (when Shamai prevailed over Hillel) was a difficult one just like the day of the Egel.  Since the Gemara relates that they took a head-count and ruled according to the majority present, which is in accordance with the Torah, why are the results negated?

Shabbos 37 – שבת לז

The Gemara explains that Rav Sheshes needed to teach us the diyuk (inference) in the Mishna that bread which crusted is permitted.  Rashi adds that this diyuk was not self-evident.  However the Mishna seems to state clearly that the issur is merely if it won’t crust before Shabbos, which clearly implies that crusting is the benchmark.  Why is this not self-evident?

Today’s Daf Yomi Question:

Tosfos explains that even according to Shmuel who holds ‘Eruv mishum kinyan’ if they opt to use food for the Eruv which isn’t ‘derech kinyan’ , they will need the significant amount of two se’udos.  Since this is not by method of Kinyan, why does the Gemara say that according to Shmuel food used for the Eruv needs to be worth a Perutah?
