Today’s Daf Yomi Question:

The Gemara asks, according to Tana D’vei Rabi Yishmael why not include all materials for tzitzis from the passuk ‘asher techaseh bah’; but then how will we understand the fact that the Torah twice stated the words ‘wool and linen’ (by Negga) since there will be nothing that we are excluding?

  1. The two Mi’utim where for Negaim. The Tana D’bei Rebbe Yishmael told us to
make a Binyan Av to other areas. According to Abaye and Rava this is
referring to other areas of Tuma. According to Rav Papa and Rav Nachman,
it does not apply to other areas of Tuma.

  2. Lemaskana what does r papa do with af kol since he learns a kal vechomer for covering with shatnez is assur he has an extra word of af kol

    • The kal vachomer was actually not said by Rav Papa but rather the Gemara’s kasha on Rav Papa; according to him, what is ‘af kol’ referring to – since covering with kilayim is already known from the kal vachomer. Indeed this kasha on Rav Papa serves as a refutation of Rav Papa as the Gemara concludes.

Perhaps Rav Papa himself did not agree with this kal vachomer, since covering oneself with kilayim is not the same as an act of wearing. Thus, only with regard to ‘wearing’ does the Torah stipulate that it needs to be a garment of wool and linen (since only these ‘prominent’ materials can comprise a true ‘beged’) however the issur of covering with kilayim isn’t necessarily related to an act of wearing and perhaps wouldn’t have the same requirements as a ‘beged’. But from af kol we learn that indeed even the prohibition of covering is specific to only wool and linen.
