When the Mishna describes the din of placing an Eruv inside a city, why do we need to mention two cases (large and small city)?

  1. According to the Girsa that the people of the small village may not go through the large town, it all makes sense.

According to Rav Idi’s Girsa (our Girsa), we can also see a very good reason to mention both. There is a new point brought out in each case. In either cases we say that both cities are considered four Amos, the first because you stayed there and the other because your Eruv is there.

When you sleep over in the large town and leave your Eruv in the small village, the Eruv is valid although you are currently more than 2,000 Amos from your Eruv. When you stay in the small village and put the Eruv in the large town we say that you get the entire large town including it’s Techum, even though the end of the large town is long past 2,000 Amos from the village in which you currently find yourself.
