The Ra”n (2a) posits that protection from the sun’s heat is included in the ‘tzel’ (shade) requirement. The Shulchan Aruch HaRav explains, since the Succah is meant to resemble Annanei Hakavod whose function was to provide shade, albeit a spiritual shade (which protects from all spiritual – and by default physical – threats, as you mention) likewise a Succah is characterized strictly as a shade provider (in today’s Insights on the Daf there is further elaboration on this topic).
