It has always been puzzling to me: How could there have been so much corruption of mitzvot, lewd behavior etc within Yerusahlayim while a Beis Hamikdash stood with the Kedusha emanating from it and the Kohanim beavodasam uliviyim beshiram uvzimram?
Yes indeed it is difficult to comprehend. The only thing that comes to mind is the recurring theme mentioned in the writings of the Ramcha”l and others, how Hashem arranged everything in this world with a system of ‘Zeh le’umas zeh’; the greater the Kedusha, the greater the challenge and opposition to it. In fact I once saw that ever since the Yetzer Hora of Avodah Zarah was annulled (see Yoma 69b) we cannot achieve the same level of Kedusha as was available then (i.e. prevalence of Nevu’ah etc.) – so we see that it all works together in tandem.
They were were implicated on everything including their arrogance. The Navi enumerates many sins.
