Shabbos 126 – שבת קכו

We learned in the Mishna (124b) that even a broken piece of pottery may be used on Shabbos.  How does this concur with Rebbi Yochanan who requires the utensil-lid be classified as a keli in its own right?

  1. A broken piece of pottery has the status of a Keli because it doesn’t lose the status it had when it was whole, as long as it is still usable. Reb Yochanan is talking about an object that we need to define as a Keli to begin with.
