Today’s Daf Yomi Question:

Why couldn’t Rebbi Eliezer be Mochel on his honor, as the Gemara (Kiddushin 32b) says that a Rebbi has the ability to Mochel on his Kavod?

  1. Moshe Rabbeinu actually was Mochel, as he clearly said. Nevertheless, it affected Yehoshua. This might not be an issue of Kavod as much as a problem with the Talmid’s appreciation of a Rebbe.

    The Gemara brings a Machlokes what Yehoshua was punished for. Either it was for making a proclamation in front of his Rebbe or it was for Bittul Piria Veribia. The latter is very understandable that it was Midah Bemidah, but what about the first? With the above explanation we can understand it. A Talmid supposed to be a continuation of the Mesora. Once someone is missing this element he can get punished by not having whom to pass on to.
