Shabbos 75 – שבת עה

Rashi states the reason for the exemption of ‘Misasek’ is because Shabbos requires ‘Meleches machsheves’ (see Rashi D”H Misasek).  Previously, Rashi had quoted the passuk of ‘Asher chatah bah’ (see Rashi 72b D”H V’chatach es) for the din of Misasek – why was it necessary to provide another source here?

  1. There are two types of Misasek, one applies to Kol Hatorah and the other applies to Shabbos. The first type is when you didn’t have in mind to commit such an act at all. Abaye and Rava argue as to how far we take this: If he had in mind the general type of action but not the form which is Assur. This type of Misasek is learned from Asher Chata Ba, and applies all over with the exception of Chalavim and Arayos.

The second type is when he meant to cut and succeeded in cutting, but did not gain benefit because he cut the wrong one. This only applies to Shabbos and is not derived from Asher Chata Ba, because he had in mind to transgress and nevertheless we say that he does not have Maleches Machsheves — for he did not end up doing what he set out to do.

Usually, when we say Ein Mis’chaven, we are referring to what is a branch of the common type of Misasek and therefore applies to Kol Hatorah, according to Reb Shimon. The Ein Mis’chaven of Abaye and Rava however, is actually Misasek, but to a lesser, and debatable, extent.
