Today’s Daf Yomi Question:

The Gemara differentiates between filling a pillow for the first time which is considered a Melacha, versus refilling an old pillow which is permitted.  Once the filling falls out which renders the pillow useless, why is the refilling not viewed as a fashioning of a kli?

  1. Just as with returning a strap to a shoe, the shoe, and in our case the pillow, remained a Kli. It is in a circumstance that it can’t be benefited from, but it is still whole.

Until you put in the stuffing for the first time it wasn’t a pillow, and until the shoe had its straps it wasn’t a shoe. But, once it became what it is, until it is broken it remains.

  2. Dear Rabbi, Would you consider a modern soda can like the barrel in today’s daf? If so, why would there be any problem in opening a soda can on Shabbos since the top is separate and simply sealed to the bottom? Wouldn’t opening the tab be simiar to the example of using a sword to open a barrel and causing other damage to the kli?

    • Opening a container on Shabbos can theoretically involve two Melachos: 1) Rendering the item into a Kli 2) Fashioning a (proper) opening for the Kli, which is also a Melacha.
Regarding today’s cans; although somewhat comparable to barrels in the Gemara, they may be deemed more stringent since all parts of the can are actually fused together as one, unlike the lid which is still considered a separate entity from the barrel.
A mitigating factor is the fact that the can is intended for one-time use and he has no intention of reusing it after emptying. Some authorities permit on account of this factor, provided that it is not opened in the conventional manner (where a proper opening is formed) rather via puncturing the can in an asymmetrical uneven fashion (similar to chopping off the barrel with a sword).

  3. 1)Can we do hatmana with mochin?

2)When it says tamei by scissors it means when its attached that if one side gets tamei other side is automatically or when its detached?

3)What’s gemaras answer of afilu beavir nami litamu?

    • 1) Yes, when they are dry
      2) When attached together
      3) The kasha was, if they are considered as one, then why regarding tumas avir are they regarded as separate. The answer is that since this concept (to consider them as one in these cases) is miderabanan, they did not want to apply it to avir, this will distinguish it from tuma min hatorah and will demonstrate to all that it is only miderabanan.
      All the best

    • Tosfos explains that the concern here is not due to Hatmanah, rather it is related to Bishul. Although the intention was to merely warm up the cold water in the container by placing it on top of the Maycham (which was of the flame), nevertheless there is a concern he may leave it there long enough until it actually heats to the point of Bishul. Therefore Raba objected to him placing it there at all.

  4. I am a little confused about the part at the end about a crockpot. Is the problem that the outer walls of the crockpot, which is also where the heating element is located, is considered a dvar she-mosif hevel? If so, that’s why there is a suggestion to elevate the ceramic pot from the outer walls. What is the rationale for those people who do not elevate the ceramic pot?
