Today we learned the sacrifices were required for kapora. It has always made a profound impression on me and confused me that the haftorah for vayikra and others speaks of Hashem’s distaste for korbonos that are offered without proper intent or kavanah, in one case even saying He doesn’t need the sacrifice. I think I understood this better today when you explained that the purpose of the sacrifice was to evoke a response. So it makes sense that if this response were missing, the korbonos would be meaningless. Similarly one can understand the opinion that in the time of Moshiach we won’t need the sacrifice, because the previously evoked response will be more natural.
